The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a sharp rise in cholera outbreaks in Yemen in 2025, driven by worsening living conditions and the ongoing conflict. Between January 1 and August 31, the country recorded 72,260 new cases of cholera and acute watery diarrhea, including 201 deaths, with 10,848 infections and 34 fatalities reported in August alone.

Yemen now ranks third globally for cholera incidence, following Afghanistan with 116,000 cases and South Sudan with 74,494. The surge highlights the fragility of Yemen’s health system, as hospitals and medical centers struggle with severe shortages of medicines and essential supplies.

WHO emphasized that the outbreak is exacerbated by conflict and poverty, noting that half of the country’s medical facilities have been destroyed. Cholera-related deaths and infections continue to rise in other countries as well, such as Sudan, which recorded over 2,400 fatalities across 17 states last year, according to UNICEF.
