Yemen’s National Museum Damaged in Israeli Airstrikes on Sanaa
………..
The National Museum of Yemen in Sanaa, one of the country’s leading cultural landmarks, sustained heavy damage following Israeli airstrikes on the capital Wednesday night. The attack has drawn strong condemnation from Yemeni cultural authorities, who warned of grave risks to the nation’s heritage.
Founded in 1971, the museum houses more than 75,000 artifacts spanning Yemen’s ancient civilizations. According to the Ministry of Culture in Sanaa, the strikes damaged parts of the historic building, putting thousands of artifacts at serious risk. The ministry appealed to UNESCO for urgent intervention, describing the museum as an inseparable part of global cultural heritage.
Abbad al-Hayyal, head of Yemen’s General Authority for Antiquities and Museums, said explosions shattered windows, damaged roofs, and destroyed the rear façade. He described the situation as “catastrophic,” with the full extent of losses still unclear. The Ministry of Health reported that the airstrikes on Sanaa and al-Jawf province left 35 people dead and 131 injured, further compounding civilian suffering and cultural destruction.
