Amnesty: US strike on Yemen migrant center may be humanitarian violation

Amnesty International urged the US to investigate a deadly strike on a migrant detention center in rebel-held Saada, Yemen, that killed 68 migrants last month, Arab News reported. The attack, part of US operations against Iran-backed Houthis, targeted a known detention facility. Amnesty’s secretary-general Agnes Callamard raised serious concerns about compliance with international humanitarian law and called for a prompt, transparent investigation.

A US defense official confirmed an inquiry into civilian casualty claims. Witnesses reported severe injuries to Ethiopian migrants and overwhelmed hospital morgues. The US began intense strikes on Houthis in March after threats to Red Sea shipping, ending with a ceasefire this month.

Amnesty’s analysis of satellite images found no clear military target at the site. The group stated that attacks failing to distinguish civilians from military targets violate international law.
