Yemen Flooding Fatalities Rise to 61
Severe flooding in Yemen has claimed 61 lives since late July, with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reporting significant damage, Arab News reported yesterday.
Between July 28 and August 9, 31 fatalities were recorded, affecting over 6,000 families. The floods have impacted 34,260 homes across the country, with Marib province suffering the most, where four internally displaced individuals were killed when high winds struck their tents.
In the western province of Hodeidah, at least 30 people died last week due to catastrophic floods that destroyed homes and farmland. The Yemeni government has urgently called for international assistance to aid flood victims and restore essential services.
Meanwhile, the National Center of Meteorology warns of continued heavy rainfall and potential flooding across various regions. Local tribesmen have also negotiated a ceasefire with the Houthis in Al-Bayda, highlighting the ongoing tensions amidst the humanitarian crisis.
