WFP Calls for Investment Amid Global Flooding Crisis

As floods impact over 21 countries, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is calling for urgent investment to prepare vulnerable communities for increasing climate disasters, reliefweb reported yesterday.

In 2023, climate extremes pushed 72 million people into hunger crises, a 26% rise from the previous year.

WFP Assistant Executive Director Valerie Guarnieri emphasized the need for early action, stating, “Investing in preparedness is essential to protect people’s access to food.” This year, WFP assisted nearly 18 million people in 60 countries with climate risk management, including anticipatory actions that reached 4.1 million individuals.

Recent floods have severely affected nations like Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Sudan, complicating relief efforts. In South Sudan, flooding impacts over 735,000 people already facing food insecurity. Forecasts predict continued flooding across Asia and Africa as La Niña conditions and warm ocean temperatures heighten storm activity. WFP is advocating for enhanced early warning systems and anticipatory actions to mitigate future impacts.
