Global Temperature Hits Record High of 17.09°C on July 21

July 21, 2024, marked the hottest day ever recorded globally, with a global average surface air temperature reaching 17.09 degrees Celsius (62.76 degrees Fahrenheit), Al Jazeera reported yesterday citing preliminary data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.

This surpasses the previous record of 17.08°C set in July 2023.

Carlo Buontempo, director of the EU climate monitor, emphasized the unprecedented nature of these temperatures, warning that we are entering uncharted territory as climate change continues to escalate.

Heatwaves have recently affected large areas of the United States, Europe, and Russia, while Gaza faces worsening conditions amid ongoing conflict.

Every month since June 2023 has been the hottest on record for its respective month, with scientists attributing these extreme temperatures to human-induced global warming and the recent El Niño phenomenon, raising concerns that 2024 could surpass 2023 as the hottest year recorded.
