Elite police unit in UK to monitor social media for anti-migrant posts

An elite police unit will be established to monitor social media for anti-migrant posts and potential threats of civil unrest, The Independent reported. The National Internet Intelligence Investigations team will operate from the National Police Coordination Centre (NPoCC) in Westminster, drawing officers from forces across England and Wales. Its role is to provide early warnings and maximize social media intelligence following gaps revealed during last year’s riots.

Home Office ministers say the unit will support local commanders by identifying and responding to online threats. The announcement comes amid growing protests outside asylum hotels in cities such as Norwich, Leeds, and Bournemouth.

Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner urged ministers to address public concerns about immigration to prevent disorder. However, critics have raised concerns about free speech. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp accused the government of trying to “police what you post, what you share, what you think,” criticizing a focus on surveillance over frontline policing.

The NPoCC, which coordinated police responses during the Covid lockdowns, will oversee the new unit. Policing minister Dame Diana Johnson confirmed the team responds to recommendations from parliamentary and inspectorate bodies for nationally coordinated social media monitoring. Initial funding is secured until 2026, with future support subject to spending priorities.
