Harvard Allocates $250M to Sustain Research Amid Funding Freeze

Harvard President Alan Garber announced the university will use $250 million from its own budget to support research impacted by the Trump administration’s freeze of over $2 billion in federal grants and $60 million in contracts, Anadolu Agency reported. Garber and Provost John Manning said they will work closely with researchers to adjust programs amid ongoing funding challenges.

Garber will take a voluntary 25% pay cut for fiscal year 2026 in response to the cuts. The administration froze funding citing campus protests supporting Palestine and diversity programs, and established a Federal Task Force to Combat Antisemitism. Harvard has filed a lawsuit challenging the freeze as unlawful.

On Tuesday, an additional $450 million in federal grants and contracts were frozen, with accusations that Harvard failed to address antisemitism and alleged discrimination against white people on campus.
