Texas Leaders Accused of Weaponizing Islamophobia Against Muslim Community

Texas state leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott, Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Sen. John Cornyn, are facing criticism for targeting the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) and its residential development project, Austin American Stateman reported. Abbott falsely labeled the project a “Sharia City,” sparking xenophobic backlash, while Paxton launched an investigation into EPIC. Cornyn escalated tensions by urging the Department of Justice to intervene.
The Muslim community in Plano reports increased threats and harassment, exacerbated by discriminatory bills like SB 2233 and SB 2972, which target pro-Palestine advocacy, and SB 17, restricting land ownership for immigrants from certain countries. Critics note these measures omit explicit protections against Islamophobia.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) recorded 8,658 discrimination complaints in 2024—a historic high. Interfaith coalitions, however, are mobilizing in solidarity. Jewish, Christian, and Muslim leaders jointly condemned the state’s actions, framing the issue as a civil rights crisis.
Advocates urge Texans to challenge anti-Muslim rhetoric through grassroots activism and legislative engagement. “This isn’t just about Muslims—it’s about protecting marginalized voices,” said Sameeha Rizvi of CAIR Action.
