Eco-Islam: Wisconsin Green Muslims Champion Faith-Based Environmental Sustainability

Huda Alkaff, ecologist and founder of Wisconsin Green Muslims, has been a pioneering force in combining Islamic teachings with environmental activism for over 20 years, Wisconsin Muslim Journal reported in a recent article. Her organization advocates for water equity, climate justice, and environmental stewardship rooted in faith.

Wisconsin Green Muslims works to advance sustainability by promoting practical solutions such as distributing water filters in frontline communities disproportionately affected by pollution and contamination. Alkaff emphasizes the spiritual significance of natural resources, particularly water, highlighting practices during Ramadan that reinforce mindful consumption and respect for the environment.
Expanding beyond Wisconsin, Alkaff is developing initiatives in Michigan to broaden the impact of faith-driven ecological advocacy. The group also focuses on combating environmental hazards like lead contamination and PFAS chemicals, which pose serious health risks.
This work is featured as part of the Color of Water series, a collaboration with the Water Hub aimed at raising awareness about water justice issues. In recognition of Earth Month and following Ramadan, Wisconsin Green Muslims will host an educational webinar titled “Earth Care: An Islamic Responsibility” on April 27, 2025, spotlighting green Ramadan activities and community efforts to make mosques and Islamic centers more sustainable.
Published by the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition, the Wisconsin Muslim Journal is the first media outlet dedicated to covering news and stories about the Muslim community in Wisconsin, highlighting voices like Alkaff’s in the ongoing dialogue on faith and environmental justice.
