Texas Governor Opposes Muslim Community Development, Citing Shariah Concerns

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is facing criticism for opposing a proposed 400-acre residential development anchored by a mosque in Josephine, Texas, New York Times reported. The East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) plans to build around 1,000 homes, but Abbott claims it could lead to the imposition of Shariah law, which he says is not allowed in Texas.

Abbott’s social media posts and state investigations into potential fair housing and financial violations, along with alleged illegal funeral practices, have fueled anti-Muslim sentiment. Public hearings have included expressions of hostility, with some residents citing fears of honor killings and forced marriages.

EPIC leaders deny any intention to impose religious rules, emphasizing their commitment to U.S. and Texas laws. Supporters highlight the Islamic Center’s community contributions, including food banks and medical services. Despite the controversy, some local religious leaders have offered support, while others express concerns about potential segregation.
