Trump Administration Classifies Thousands of Living Immigrants as Deceased, Prompting Them to Leave

The Trump administration has classified over 6,000 living immigrants as dead, canceling their social security numbers and effectively removing their ability to work or access benefits, The Guardian reported. This controversial move aims to pressure these individuals to leave the United States, particularly targeting those who entered under programs established by former President Joe Biden.

By transferring the names and social security numbers of these immigrants to a deceased persons database, the administration complicates their access to essential services that require social security identification. The affected individuals had previously been granted temporary legal status and work authorization.

Additionally, a federal judge recently halted plans to force hundreds of thousands of Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans with temporary legal status to leave the country. Advocacy groups, including Democracy Forward, are preparing to challenge the administration’s actions in court, citing violations of legal processes and checks and balances.
