Wylie Library Showcases Ramadan Display to Share Muslim Culture

For the second consecutive year, Smith Public Library in Wylie, Texas, has created a display featuring books, décor, and information about Ramadan, the holiest month for Muslims, NBC DFW reported. This final week of Ramadan sees billions of Muslims fasting from dawn to sunset, praying, giving charity, and spending time with family.
The library’s display includes resources to educate the community about Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Nadaa Hassan, a children’s book author, highlighted the significance of fasting and charity during this month. Her book, “Ramadan Around the World,” is featured alongside festive decorations like crescent moons and miniature mosques.
Sarah Idris, the organizer of the display, noted that children participated in creating art projects reflecting their Ramadan memories, fostering a sense of inclusion. The display also features the Quran, emphasizing its importance during Ramadan.
Idris organized story time events where families gathered to hear Hassan read her book, promoting representation and self-confidence among American Muslim children. Library director Ofilia Barrera expressed the importance of community representation and cultural understanding, hoping the display encourages curiosity and dialogue among diverse groups.
The initiative aims to foster connections and understanding, reflecting the Islamic principle of kindness toward neighbors. Idris and Hassan hope this effort opens conversations and helps children feel confident in their identities while contributing positively to their communities.
