Lawmakers Push for U.S. Withdrawal from the U.N.

Republican lawmakers, led by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), have introduced the Disengaging Entirely From the United Nations Debacle Act of 2025, seeking to withdraw the U.S. from the United Nations and terminate funding, FOX News reported. Lee criticized the U.N. as a platform for “tyrants” that undermines American interests, a sentiment echoed by Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), who questioned the organization’s effectiveness in preventing global crises.

The U.S. contributed over $18 billion to the U.N. in 2022, making up about a third of its budget. Lawmakers argue this funding supports a “corrupt” organization, citing concerns over U.N. agencies like UNRWA, which has faced scrutiny for alleged ties to terrorist groups.

Bipartisan criticism of the U.N. has emerged, particularly regarding its perceived bias against Israel. The proposed legislation would also bar U.S. participation in U.N. peace negotiations and require Senate approval for future agreements. Public opinion remains divided, with significant differences between Democrats and Republicans regarding the U.N.’s role.
