CAIR Urges Enhanced Security for Mosques After Nashville Plot
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has urged mosques and Islamic institutions across the U.S. to review their security measures following the arrest of 18-year-old Gunner Joseph Fisher in Tennessee, who allegedly plotted a mass shooting at a Nashville mosque. Fisher’s plan was reportedly inspired by the 2019 white supremacist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.
CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell commended law enforcement for thwarting the plot and highlighted the need for increased security in light of rising anti-Muslim hate incidents. CAIR recommends that mosques implement basic safety precautions, such as installing security cameras, practicing emergency evacuation plans, and employing armed guards for major events.
The organization also encourages community leaders to utilize its “Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety” booklet. CAIR has documented a significant rise in bias complaints, with 4,951 reported from January to June 2024, marking a 69% increase compared to the previous year.
