New York Attorney General’s Office Appoints First Director of Muslim Affairs

In a significant move, New York Attorney General Letitia James has announced the appointment of Mohammad Awais as the Office of the Attorney General’s (OAG) first-ever Director of Muslim Affairs, AMNY Newsletter reported.

Officially starting on December 6, 2024, Awais has engaged with Muslim communities across New York, addressing their specific needs, and connecting them to OAG resources related to civil rights, housing, workers’ rights, and consumer protection.

Attorney General James emphasized the importance of this role, stating, “New York is home to one of the largest Muslim communities in the country. This new position will help ensure that Muslim New Yorkers’ voices are heard, their needs are met, and their rights are protected.”

The establishment of this position comes amid rising concerns over Islamophobia and anti-Arab sentiment. Awais will be part of the OAG’s Intergovernmental Affairs team, which aims to strengthen connections with diverse communities, including Latino, Jewish, and Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI).

The Attorney General has been actively involved with Muslim communities through town halls and community events, underscoring her commitment to fostering inclusivity and support for all New Yorkers.
