First Severe Human Case of Avian Influenza Detected in the U.S.
The United States has confirmed its first severe human case of avian influenza, with a patient hospitalized in Louisiana on December 18, Khaama Press reported. The individual is in critical condition, suffering from severe respiratory symptoms. In response, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, emphasizing the need for resources and flexibility to manage the outbreak.
This year alone, over 60 cases of avian influenza have been reported, with more than half occurring in California. The infected individual had contact with cows that tested positive for the virus, with 33 cows confirmed infected, according to the California Department of Public Health.
Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, primarily affects birds but can occasionally infect humans, posing significant risks. Public health officials are monitoring the situation closely to prevent further human cases and underscore the importance of preparedness against zoonotic diseases.
