US: Largest wildfire swells to cover area bigger than Los Angeles
Wildfires in California have grown to alarming proportions, with the Park fire becoming the largest this year, scorching over 386,000 acres and threatening thousands of structures, the Guardian reported yesterday.
Firefighters are battling the blaze, now 14% contained, amid challenging terrain and weather conditions. The Borel fire has devastated the historic town of Havilah, prompting evacuations for around 2,000 residents.
In northern California, more than 5,500 firefighters are engaged in containment efforts, while satellite footage reveals the rapid expansion of the fires. Evacuation orders remain in effect for 25 active wildfires across the western U.S., with over 27,000 personnel deployed to combat the flames.
In Oregon, the 2024 wildfire season has already consumed over 1.2 million acres, surpassing the size of Rhode Island. As the climate crisis intensifies, the frequency and severity of these wildfires continue to raise alarms across the region.
