MCB launches grassroots voter drive inspired by New York mayor Zohran Mamdani

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) is launching a nationwide campaign to boost voter registration and civic participation among British Muslims, inspired by the grassroots strategy used in Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral campaign.

Under secretary general Dr Wajid Akhter, the “Hungry for Change” initiative aims to combine digital outreach with local organising, with 200 volunteer “voter champions” already active across more than 30 areas ahead of local elections.

The MCB says it has helped register thousands of voters and plans to expand the model nationally before the next general election. The group is also encouraging mosques to act as wider community hubs offering social services.

The initiative reflects a broader shift toward community-led engagement amid the organisation’s long-running strained relationship with UK governments, with the MCB focusing on civic mobilisation rather than political recognition.
