Grand Ayatollah Shirazi remarks on Sayyida Umm al-Banin, her martyrdom

The daily scholarly meeting of Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Sadegh al-Hosseini al-Shirazi was held on Wednesday, the 13th of Jumadi al-Thani. In this session, just like the previous meetings, the Marja answered the questions of the attendees about various jurisprudence issues.

Grand Ayatollah Shirazi discussed the fact that Sayyida Umm al-Binin and Shamar were related, as it is reported that Abal-Fazl al-Abbas was the grandson of Kalab through his daughter and Shamar was the grandson of Kalab through his son. He said: There have been many tribal associations of this type in history, and sometimes in one clan, there have been both good and bad people, such as the Banu Asad clan, to which both Habib bin Mazahir and Harmala belong.

His Eminence continued: Sayyida Umm al-Binin’s original name was Fatimah, and Umm al-Binin was not her real name, rather it is considered a formal Kunya. It is mentioned in the chronicles since when she was called by that title.

Regarding her death, Grand Ayatollah Shirazi said: The word martyr in the general sense of the term definitely applies to Sayyida Umm al-Binin, because of the atrocities that the Umayyads inflicted upon her, including the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, peace be upon him, and the martyrdom of her four sons, which were enough for her to be martyred. So, there is no doubt about her martyrdom in the general sense of the term.
