Grand Ayatollah Shirazi remarks on “infallibility”, Wilayah of Amir al-Mu’minin, peace be upon him
The daily scholarly meeting of Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Sadegh al-Hosseini al-Shirazi was held on Tuesday, the 22nd of Rabi al-Thani. In this session, like the previous meetings, the Supreme Marja answered the questions of the attendees about various jurisprudence issues.
Grand Ayatollah Shirazi discussed the concept of infallibility and said: Infallibility does not mean determinism in tasks, that is, the immaculate Infallibles are not like a lamp that inherently produces light and is unable not to shine. Rather, they are able to commit sins, but they do not.
His Eminence went on to say: Infallibility is a prerequisite for prophethood and imamate, and God Almighty has given this privilege to the immaculate 14 Infallibles by compulsion and without their consent. But this does not mean that because they are “Ma’soom”, they are not capable of sinning. They can but they don’t.
The Marja then discussed verse 3 of Surah al-Ma’idah, which refers to the perfection of religion and the Wilayah of Amirul Momineen, and said: In addition to the fact that there are traditions from the Masoomin (peace be upon them), linking this verse to the Wilayah of Amirul Momineen, peace be upon him, some of the enemies of Amir al-Mu’minin and those who deviated from his path, and whose enmity towards Amir al-Mu’minin is certain from their words, like Zayd bin Thabit, have narrated hadith confirming that the “perfection-of-religion” verse was revealed on the Wilayah of Amir al-Mu’minin.
