Scottish MPs, religious figures welcome new Afghan refugees

The United Glasgow Refugee Rights Organization has held a special celebration to welcome the newly arrived Afghan refugees in Scotland.

A number of Scottish MPs and religious, political, and social figures, including Shia clerics, attended the ceremony and welcomed the refugees who fled the persecution in their country to resettle in Scotland.

Ali Abbas Al-Razi, director of the Ahlulbayt Foundation in Scotland, said following his participating in the celebration: “The newly arrived Afghan refugees have received an official welcome from MPs and various Scottish religious, social, and political groups.”

Al-Razi explained that “this event is important to welcome our Afghan brothers who have been granted asylum in Scotland, to show them support as they build a new life here in this country.”

He added that “the attendees welcomed the new refugees who fled their country after the Taliban took control of the government, and will be resettled under the UK government’s program.”

For their part, Scottish MPs present at the celebration told the new refugees: “This is your parliament and we welcome you very much.”

MP Mary Robinson pointed out that “the Afghan refugees were forced from their homeland after the Taliban took power in very difficult circumstances and will be honored and resettled to live in peace here.”
