Torrential rains claim at least 11 lives in Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria

Severe rainstorms continue to lash parts of Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria, causing the death toll to rise to 11 after rescue teams recovered four more bodies.

The storm, named Daniel by Greek meteorologists, has been battering the region since Monday and has mainly affected the central Greek region of Magnesia and its capital, Volos, 300km (185 miles) north of Athens.

A flash flood at a campsite in northwestern Turkey killed at least four people and carried away bungalow homes, while another two people died in Istanbul, where Tuesday’s storms inundated hundreds of homes and workplaces in several neighbourhoods.

Since Monday evening, Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast has also been hit by the heaviest rains in years, with thunderstorms causing rivers to overflow, damaging bridges and cutting off access in the region south of the coastal city of Burgas.
