Singaporeans ready to elect their 9th president
More than 2.7 million people in Singapore are expected to cast votes on Friday to elect their new president for a six-year term.
The Elections Department of Singapore has urged all people from all races and religions to participate in this election.
According to 2020 census data, of the four million citizens and permanent residents, 31.1 percent are Buddhist, 20 percent identify as having no religion, 18.9 percent Christian, 15.6 percent Muslim, 8.8 percent Taoist, and 5 percent Hindu.
Shia Ithna ’Asheri Muslims have been in Singapore since before the First World War of 1914 to 1918. Muharram majaalis were held and continued after the war for several decades at the homes of two prominent families – the Namazie family, and a Khoja family, that of Rajabali Jumabhoy – which kept the Shia community alive in this country.
