Hazara Shia’s Plight: Muharram Restrictions Under Taliban Rule

The holy month of Muharram holds immense significance for Shia Muslims worldwide. For the Hazara Shia community in Afghanistan, observing Muharram has been a time of spiritual reflection and solemn remembrance. However, under the rule of the Taliban, the Hazara Shia population has faced numerous restrictions and challenges during this sacred month.

One of the central features of Muharram observance is the organization of processions and gatherings. Under Taliban rule, such processions have often been banned or severely restricted, citing security concerns. The prohibition of public gatherings has deprived the Hazara Shia community of their sacred rituals and the emotional support they find in coming together during this time.

Taliban have been forcing the Hazaras to finish their majlis by using force and even ripping off their black banners and Alams which are symbolic to the Shia.

The Taliban has often imposed censorship on these speeches, monitoring the content to ensure that they align with their strict interpretation of Islam. This suppression has stifled freedom of expression and religious discourse for the Hazara Shias.
