United Nations passes resolution on insulting Holy Quran

Following the burning of Quran in Sweden, the United Nations Human Rights Council passed a resolution on religious hatred on Wednesday, July 12.

This resolution, which was presented by Pakistan on behalf of 57 member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, asked the Secretary General of the United Nations to publish a report on religious hatred. It also called on the governments to review their laws and examine the obstacles to prevent the promotion of religious hatred.

28 countries voted for this resolution, 12 countries voted against and seven countries abstained.

The United Nations Human Rights Council has also passed a resolution on religious hatred, which was opposed by the United States and the European Union, who say that such an issue conflicts with their views on human rights and freedom of expression.

International media reported that the voting result was a major setback for Western countries at a time when the Organization of Islamic Cooperation has gained unprecedented influence in the Human Rights Council.

The Human Rights Council is the only body composed of governments to protect human rights around the world.
