European Saudi Organisation for Human Rights sends letter to UN Special Rapporteur on Peaceful Assembly
The European Saudi Organisation for Human Rights (ESOHR), along with 14 other organizations, have sent a letter to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Nyaletsossi Voule,
In the letter sent on June 26, 2023, the organizations attempted at driving the UN official’s attention to the grave violations against peaceful assembly and association in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Tunisia and Egypt, calling on him to ensure that these governments respect this right.
The letter confirmed that security men in Lebanon used violence and force to suppress the demonstrators. Tear gas and rubber bullets were also used to disperse and detain the demonstrators, the letter added.
In Tunisia, the organization said that government forces used tear gas and rubber bullets to silence the peaceful demonstrations and had arrested a number of minors.
In Egypt, the government repeatedly suppressed and silenced peaceful assemblies and demonstrations, and it detained and tortured activists and protesters.
The organizations, in their letter, considered these human rights violations unacceptable, calling on the UN Special Rapporteur to closely monitor their development and to condemn them.
