AI Giant Anthropic to Allocate 5% of Shares to Public Benefit Fund
—————————————
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has announced plans to allocate 5% of its shares to a fund supporting the public good, with the stake valued at approximately $48 billion based on its latest valuation. The proposal is subject to shareholder approval and comes as the developer of the Claude chatbot prepares for a potential stock market listing.
The company said the fund could support nonprofit organisations or provide direct assistance to specific populations. Anthropic also plans to contribute an additional 2% of its shares for every 50% increase in its value above an undisclosed baseline.
The initiative comes amid growing concerns about artificial intelligence’s potential impact on employment, the environment and society. Anthropic said AI could generate significant economic value while also creating instability for workers, adding that more ambitious measures may be necessary as the technology advances.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic operates as a public benefit corporation, requiring its directors to balance financial interests with its public mission. The company is reportedly considering a stock market listing in November 2026, although its plans remain subject to change.
Following the announcement, SpaceX founder Elon Musk called for shares to be distributed directly to the public and said he planned to give a SpaceX share to every child in the United States next year.
