UK: Oldham Council Approves Shah Jalal Mosque Expansion to Provide New Facilities for Women
————————
Oldham Council has approved plans to expand Shah Jalal Mosque in the Werneth area, allowing a neighbouring house to be converted into dedicated facilities for women to support religious worship and community activities.

The project aims to provide Muslim women with additional space for prayers, social gatherings, advice, and community support, while strengthening connections among local residents and helping reduce social isolation.

According to the council’s planning documents, the proposal received eight letters of support during public consultation, with no objections or neutral representations recorded. The planning report identified a specific need for the development, highlighting its potential to increase prayer space and provide an additional community facility.

The approval is subject to 11 planning conditions covering matters including tree protection, noise control, safety, and compliance with local planning requirements. Construction must begin within three years of the approval date.

The expansion is expected to strengthen the mosque’s role as a religious and social centre, providing women with greater opportunities to participate in worship and community life.
