Nine European Rights Groups Condemn EU Parliament Resolution on ‘Islamic Influence,’ Warn of Rising Islamophobia

Nine European civil society and human rights organizations have criticized a European Parliament resolution calling for stronger measures against what it describes as “Islamic infiltration” and networks linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, warning that it could fuel Islamophobia and restrict Muslim organizations’ civic activities.

The resolution was adopted on October 8, 2026, by 381 votes to 167, with 15 abstentions. It calls for tighter oversight of EU funding, mechanisms to identify entities suspected of links to the Muslim Brotherhood, and assessments of whether certain organizations or individuals meet legal criteria for terrorist designation.

In a joint statement, the nine organizations argued that associating Muslim youth and rights groups with the Brotherhood without sufficient evidence could undermine their access to funding, weaken their participation in European institutions and increase suspicion toward Muslim communities. Supporters of the resolution, meanwhile, emphasize the need to monitor EU funding and ensure recipients comply with the bloc’s values.

The resolution is non-binding and does not automatically place the Muslim Brotherhood on the EU’s terrorist list. The organizations urged EU institutions to protect freedom of association, equal treatment and civic participation while combating discrimination against Muslims.
