Uganda Launches Project to Translate Quranic Meanings into Lango Language

Uganda’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Ramadan Mubaje, has officially launched a project to translate the meanings of the Holy Quran into the Lango language, a Nilotic language spoken mainly in northern Uganda.
The initiative aims to make Quranic teachings more accessible to Lango-speaking Muslims by providing them with an opportunity to understand the meanings of the Quran in their native language.
A specialized seven-member committee has been formed to oversee the translation process. The committee includes Islamic scholars, religious experts, translators, and language specialists tasked with ensuring both accuracy in conveying Quranic meanings and clarity of expression in the Lango language.
The project primarily targets Muslim communities in northern Uganda who speak Lango, helping them engage more directly with Quranic teachings and religious knowledge.
The costs of the translation project are being funded by businessman Hajj Masoud Obeid, a native of the Lango region currently residing in the capital, Kampala. The initiative is part of efforts to support religious and educational programs serving Uganda’s Muslim community.
Sheikh Mubaje expressed appreciation for the support behind the project and encouraged further contributions toward initiatives that promote Islamic education and community development.
