France Reports Nearly 8,000 Excess Deaths Linked to Summer 2026 Heatwaves

French public health authorities reported thousands of excess deaths during four major heatwaves that affected the country between May and August 2026. Recent assessments indicate that the total number of additional deaths during these periods exceeded 8,000.

The summer was marked by an early onset of extreme heat and prolonged, repeated heatwaves that placed significant pressure on healthcare systems, public services and daily life. Health experts warned that while older adults remained among the most affected groups due to risks such as dehydration and heat stress, younger age groups were also impacted.

The rise in heat-related deaths has renewed attention on France’s vulnerability to extreme temperatures, recalling the devastating 2003 heatwave that caused around 15,000 deaths and led to major changes in heat protection policies.

Experts noted that measures introduced since 2003, particularly in elderly care facilities, have helped reduce risks, but the intensity and duration of recent heatwaves present new challenges.

The figures have increased calls for stronger climate adaptation measures, improved infrastructure and expanded prevention plans as France prepares for the possibility of more frequent and severe heat events.
