Shiite communities and followers of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) commemorate the blessed birth anniversary of Sayyid Abd al-Azim al-Hasani, a distinguished scholar, hadith narrator, and revered descendant of the Prophet’s family, whose shrine in the city of Rayy is regarded as a major center of spiritual devotion.
The anniversary falls on the fourth of Rabi‘ al-Thani, marking the birth of Sayyid Abd al-Azim al-Hasani in Medina in 173 AH. He was a descendant of Imam al-Hasan ibn Ali, peace be upon him, with his noble lineage tracing back through several generations to the grandson of the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family.
Throughout his life, Sayyid Abd al-Azim benefited from the teachings of several Imams of Ahl al-Bayt, including Imam Ali al-Ridha, Imam Muhammad al-Jawad, and Imam Ali al-Hadi, peace be upon them. He became known for his knowledge, piety, and dedication to preserving and spreading the teachings of the Prophet’s family.
According to historical accounts, due to increasing pressure and persecution from Abbasid authorities, Sayyid Abd al-Azim left Medina following the guidance of the Imams and eventually migrated to Iran. He settled in the city of Rayy, where he secretly but effectively continued his religious and scholarly activities.
In Rayy, he played a significant role in guiding the Shiite community, answering religious questions, addressing doubts, and teaching the principles and teachings of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). His efforts received special recognition from Imam al-Hadi, peace be upon him, who is reported to have appointed him as a representative and directed people to refer to him regarding religious matters.
The spiritual status of Sayyid Abd al-Azim has been highlighted in narrations from the Imams. Among the most well-known is a narration attributed to Imam al-Hadi, peace be upon him, who told a resident of Rayy that visiting the grave of Abd al-Azim in his hometown would be comparable to visiting the shrine of Imam al-Husayn, peace be upon him, in Karbala.
Beyond his spiritual position, Sayyid Abd al-Azim was also recognized as an important scholar of hadith. He contributed to preserving Shiite intellectual heritage through transmitting numerous narrations and authoring works, including the book Khutab Amir al-Mu’minin (Sermons of Imam Ali), peace be upon him.
Today, his shrine in Rayy remains a prominent place of pilgrimage, attracting visitors seeking spiritual connection and commemorating the legacy of a scholar who dedicated his life to preserving the teachings and values of Ahl al-Bayt.
