Shia Rights Watch Calls on Iraqi Government to Seek Release of Iraqis Detained in Egypt

The Shia Rights Watch organization has urged the Iraqi government to take immediate diplomatic action to secure the release of more than 50 Iraqi citizens detained in Egypt following their arrest during a religious mourning gathering in Cairo.

Efforts by human rights organizations and legal advocates have begun to follow up on the situation of the detained Iraqis and seek their release after Egyptian security forces arrested dozens of Iraqi pilgrims and residents during a mourning ceremony near one of Cairo’s religious sites.

According to Shia Waves Agency, the international Shia Rights Watch organization sent an official letter to the Iraqi prime minister requesting urgent diplomatic intervention over the detention of the Iraqi citizens.

The organization emphasized respect for the laws and sovereignty of countries, but stated that the arrests, reportedly carried out over the holding of a mourning ceremony near the shrine of Lady Zaynab (peace be upon her), raise concerns regarding freedom of belief and the practice of religious rituals recognized in international agreements.

Shia Rights Watch called on the Iraqi government to use consular and legal channels to protect the safety and dignity of the detained citizens and facilitate their swift release and return.
