Indian Scholars’ Association Opposes Demolition Order for Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, Calls for Legal Alternatives

The Association of Indian Scholars has expressed concern over a decision by authorities in Uttar Pradesh to demolish several buildings of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur, warning that the move could affect thousands of students and raise questions over justice and the rule of law.

The association’s president, Maulana Mahmood Madani, said the demolition would deprive thousands of students of access to an important educational institution. He urged the state government to reconsider the decision and explore available legal alternatives before proceeding with the removal of the structures.

Madani noted that Uttar Pradesh’s urban planning and development laws allow authorities to pursue other measures, including regularizing violations, modifying construction plans, or imposing legal fees and penalties instead of immediately ordering demolition. He said similar approaches have been applied in comparable cases across the state.

The association also referred to previous court rulings that favored legal settlements and corrective measures over the demolition of buildings, arguing that protecting educational institutions serves the public interest and safeguards students’ right to continue their studies.

The group called on Uttar Pradesh authorities to adopt legal procedures that address any alleged violations while preserving the university as an educational institution serving a large number of students.
