Iraq Sentences Two Convicts to More Than Five Years in Prison for Promoting Daesh Online

The Central Criminal Court of Iraq has sentenced two individuals to five years and one month in prison after convicting them of promoting extremist ideology and supporting the Daesh terrorist organization through social media platforms.

According to a statement from the Media Center of the Supreme Judicial Council, the two convicts were members of what is known as a “lone wolf cell” and used digital platforms to spread extremist content, support Daesh’s ideology, and encourage terrorist activities.

The court issued the verdict after confirming the evidence against the defendants, based on Article 10 of Iraq’s Law No. 32 of 2016, which prohibits the Baath Party and organizations, parties, and activities associated with racist, terrorist, or extremist ideologies.

The ruling comes as part of ongoing Iraqi judicial and security efforts to prosecute individuals involved in supporting terrorist groups, including those who use social media to spread extremist propaganda and incite violence.
