Shrine of Lady Zainab in Damascus Commemorates Ashura Amid Large Attendance Despite Security Conditions

Thousands of believers gathered at the shrine of Lady Zainab, peace be upon her, in the Syrian capital Damascus to commemorate Ashura and the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, despite the unstable security conditions in Syria.
Local media broadcast live scenes from the mourning ceremonies held at the holy shrine, where its halls were draped in black and the sounds of elegies and lamentations filled the atmosphere. Crowds of mourners arrived to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, his family, and his companions in the painful tragedy of Karbala.
The ceremonies included a full recitation of the account of Imam Hussein’s martyrdom and the suffering endured by him, his family, and his companions on the day of Ashura in the year 61 AH. The large crowd responded with deep grief and reverence, with sounds of weeping and mourning rising in sympathy for the grandson of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family.
The commemoration also included Husseini gatherings, as well as the recitation of special Ashura supplications and ziyarat. Participants renewed their commitment to following the path of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, and upholding his values of sacrifice, reform, and justice.
Followers of Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them, are keen to commemorate Ashura annually at the shrine of Lady Zainab, peace be upon her. The shrine is considered one of the most prominent religious centers in Syria for Husseini gatherings and rituals, despite the challenges and difficult conditions facing the country.
