Redwood City Declares April as American Muslim Appreciation, Awareness Month
—————————————–
The city of Redwood City, California, has officially proclaimed April 2026 as American Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month in a resolution recognizing the contributions and experiences of Muslim communities locally, statewide and nationally. The proclamation was issued during a special City Council meeting on April 2.
Mayor Elmer Martínez Saballos read the proclamation, highlighting the civic, cultural and economic contributions of Muslims, as well as the importance of religious freedom and social harmony. San Mateo County is home to an estimated 15,000 Muslim residents, whom city leaders described as making “innumerable contributions” across society.
The mayor also noted community institutions such as Silicon Valley’s Diyanet Ertugrul Gazi Masjid, which serves the region’s Muslim population with worship, education and community programs.
Representatives from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) spoke at the event, noting that the designation comes at a time when American Muslim communities have faced heightened Islamophobia and discrimination. CAIR said the proclamation sends a message of inclusion and respect for diverse religious identities.
Social media posts from local CAIR chapters also celebrated the recognition, underscoring broader community efforts to honor Muslim Americans’ contributions during the month of April.
The announcement aligns with similar observances in other U.S. cities that have marked April as a time to celebrate and raise awareness of American Muslim heritage and community engagement.
