Muslims in Murshidabad district of West Bengal faced severe attacks during a Ram Navami procession on March 28, leaving residents injured and livelihoods destroyed.

According to Maktoob Media and The Telegraph, men associated with Hindutva groups allegedly vandalized around 40 Muslim-owned shops in the predominantly Muslim Fultala area of Raghunathganj. The attackers looted businesses, set shops ablaze, and climbed rooftops to hoist saffron flags, spreading fear among families.

Residents described the violence as prolonged, occurring despite police and central forces being nearby. Many were forced to flee their homes as the mob assaulted inhabitants, destroyed property, and set vehicles on fire. One victim, Abul Sheikh, a municipal employee, suffered serious head injuries and lost his motorbike in the attack.

Community members and local leaders warned that the assault exacerbated communal tensions, particularly in the run-up to elections, leaving Muslims traumatized and their economic and social security under threat.

The incident has drawn criticism for highlighting the vulnerability of minority communities during religious festivals.
