Rohingya Refugees Sit First-Ever Matriculation Exams in Bangladesh Camps

Rohingya refugee students in Bangladesh have begun their first-ever matriculation examinations, marking a significant step toward formal education for the stateless community living in camps.

The exams, launched on March 26 in camps across Cox’s Bazar, are being organized by the Examination Board of Rohingya Refugees (EBRR). Authorities implemented strict security measures, coordinating with the Bangladesh Armed Police Battalion to safely distribute exam materials to multiple centers.

The initiative follows an academic structure similar to Myanmar’s matriculation system, allowing Rohingya students to maintain continuity with their previous education. Organizers say this approach could support future reintegration if repatriation becomes possible.

The exams represent one of the most structured education efforts in the camps since hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State in 2017. While informal schooling has been available, access to formal secondary education has remained limited.

Education advocates view the exams as a crucial step in preventing a “lost generation,” as more than one million Rohingya refugees continue to face uncertain futures with restricted access to higher education and employment.
