Delhi Court Acquits Two Kashmiri Youth in UAPA Case After Seven Years

A Delhi court on Thursday acquitted two Kashmiri youth, Jamsheed Zahoor Paul and Parvaiz Rashid, who were arrested in September 2018 under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

Additional Sessions Judge Amit Bansal of Patiala House Courts ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove charges of terrorist activity and alleged ISIS links, citing “great doubt” over the recovery of arms and ammunition.

The youth, then aged 19 and 24, spent 2,753 days in custody before being charged in April 2022. Witnesses to the alleged recovery did not appear in court. The Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) supported the accused, noting the acquittal as a legal victory but highlighting the personal toll of prolonged detention under UAPA.
