The UNESCO has expressed deep concern over an attack targeting a school in Sudan, underscoring the need to protect educational institutions under international law.

In a statement issued Monday, the organization said reports indicated that a drone strike in the village of Shukairi in White Nile State resulted in the deaths of several female students and education workers. The strike was reportedly attributed to the Rapid Support Forces, raising alarm over the safety of schools in conflict-affected areas.

UNESCO emphasized that schools are protected spaces under international humanitarian law and must not be targeted or used for military purposes under any circumstances.

The organization called on all parties involved in the conflict to uphold their legal obligations to safeguard students and education personnel. It also referenced United Nations Security Council Resolution 2601, which highlights the importance of protecting education during armed conflicts.

The warning comes amid growing international concern over increasing violations affecting civilians and critical infrastructure in Sudan, including educational facilities, as the conflict continues to escalate.
