UN warns of mounting humanitarian threat amid Mideast escalating conflict

The United Nations has issued a stark warning about the growing humanitarian threat across the Middle East as regional conflict continues to devastate civilian populations and infrastructure.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported severe damage to health facilities in Iran and Lebanon. In Iran, over 230 health facilities and 30 medical vehicles have been destroyed or damaged, with health workers among the casualties. Additionally, more than 54,000 civilian units, including homes, schools, and commercial buildings, have been affected.

In Lebanon, 28 attacks on healthcare facilities over two weeks resulted in 30 deaths and 35 injuries, according to the World Health Organization. Large-scale displacement is ongoing, with more than 830,000 people—about 14 percent of the population—registered as displaced, including 290,000 children. Most displaced families are outside formal shelters, relying on host families or informal arrangements.

Humanitarian agencies, including the World Food Programme (WFP), UNHCR, and UNICEF, have distributed over 800,000 hot meals, shelter items, hygiene kits, and clean water, benefiting nearly 700,000 people. UNHCR alone has delivered over 182,000 essential items to more than 375 collective sites.

The escalation has affected occupied Palestinian territories and the Gaza Strip, where dust storms have further damaged shelters. Many residents are living outdoors or in worn shelters, while shortages of food and cooking gas have forced families to burn waste for cooking.

OCHA emphasized that only two out of five health service points are currently operational in affected areas and called for urgent access for humanitarian aid, including cooking gas and essential supplies.

The UN reiterated its readiness to assist national authorities in responding to this escalating crisis, urging immediate measures to protect civilians and restore critical services.
