NYC Mayor Mamdani Condemns Islamophobic Attacks Amid Ramadan Iftar

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed a series of Islamophobic attacks during a Ramadan iftar with Muslim city workers at the Museum of the City of New York, highlighting feelings of “isolation and loneliness” experienced by Muslims in the city.

According to NY Times, Mayor Mamdani responded to recent comments from Republican politicians, including Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama and Representative Brandon Gill of Texas, as well as Queens City Council member Vickie Paladino, which he described as dehumanizing and threatening to Muslim New Yorkers. He referenced violent incidents, including a 12-year-old girl in Brooklyn hospitalized after being attacked while wearing a hijab.

“The hardship extends beyond this month, simply by belonging to our faith in this city that is our home,” Mamdani said, emphasizing that Muslims have long been part of New York while facing dehumanization from those in positions of power.

The mayor also addressed a recent far-right demonstration outside Gracie Mansion, where an attempted bombing inspired by ISIS led to two arrests. Mamdani condemned the act as “heinous terrorism.”

Community leaders praised Mamdani’s public response as a model for speaking out against hate. Councilwoman Shahana Hanif said the mayor’s remarks encouraged other leaders to support Muslim constituents and confront Islamophobia.
