A controversy has emerged in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh after remarks by a police officer during a community meeting ahead of Eid sparked criticism from opposition politicians and social media users.
According to Maktoob Media, the comments were made by Circle Officer Kuldeep Kumar during a Peace Committee meeting in the Asmoli area of Sambhal district, where local officials met with Muslim community members ahead of Alvida Jumma and upcoming Eid celebrations.
According to videos circulated online, Kumar warned that any slogans, protests, or displays related to the conflict in West Asia could lead to police action if they disrupted local law and order. In the footage, he said people who were “very concerned” about the Iran–Israel conflict should “get on a plane and go to Iran,” adding that international issues should not disturb local peace.
Kumar also warned that police would take legal action if worshippers offered prayers on roads due to lack of space in mosques or if social media users spread content related to the conflict that could create tension.
The remarks drew criticism from several political figures. Asaduddin Owaisi, leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, said citizens have a constitutional right to express opinions and protest peacefully. Imran Pratapgarhi of the Indian National Congress also called the language used by the officer inappropriate for a democratic country.
Meanwhile, Sambhal Superintendent of Police Krishan Bishnoi has reportedly sought an explanation from Kumar regarding his statements, though no official decision has yet been announced.
