Michael Pollan Warns of Threats to Human Consciousness from AI and Social Media

Author Michael Pollan has urged the public to practice “consciousness hygiene” to protect the human mind from increasing manipulation by technology, social media, and artificial intelligence, The Guardian reported.

In his new book, A World Appears, Pollan argues that modern algorithms and chatbots are eroding the private, introspective space of consciousness, influencing attention, emotional attachments, and thought patterns.

Pollan highlights social media platforms for exploiting dopamine-driven engagement, redirecting users’ attention for profit. He also warns that chatbots, widely used by teenagers for companionship, are blurring the line between human and artificial interaction, fostering attachments to entities that lack consciousness.

To safeguard mental freedom, Pollan recommends practices such as meditation, limiting technological exposure, and mindful engagement with daily life to reclaim control over one’s thoughts. He also draws parallels with psychedelic experiences, noting they, like meditation, can help delineate personal consciousness away from external influences.

Pollan emphasizes that humans must actively maintain awareness and agency over their minds, treating consciousness as a valuable and vulnerable part of human life. He warns that without deliberate effort, technology risks compromising both attention and deeper emotional experiences.
