Columbia Student Released After ICE Detention Following Mayor’s Discussion with Trump

A student at Columbia University was released from federal immigration custody hours after her detention sparked protests and political intervention, according to reports from Associated Press and other major outlets.
Elmina “Ellie” Aghayeva, an international student from Azerbaijan, was detained on February 26 by agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). University officials said agents entered her residential building without presenting a judicial warrant and allegedly misrepresented their purpose. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security later stated that Aghayeva’s student visa had been terminated in 2016 due to lack of attendance, rendering her presence in the country unlawful.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he raised the case directly with President Donald Trump. According to public statements cited by national media, Mamdani described the discussion as productive and said he urged federal authorities to reconsider the detention. Hours later, Aghayeva was released. She confirmed on social media that she was safe and returning home.
The arrest triggered demonstrations near the Manhattan campus, with students and faculty criticizing federal enforcement tactics. Acting Columbia President Claire Shipman expressed concern over the manner of entry by agents. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also questioned the approach taken by federal authorities.
Federal officials have not indicated whether further immigration proceedings are pending.
