Religious Programs, Charity Drives Mark Ramadan in Metro Detroit

Religious Programs, Charity Drives Mark Ramadan in Metro Detroit
——————————————
Muslims across the Metro Detroit area in southeast Michigan are observing Ramadan this year with shorter fasting hours and an expanded slate of religious and community programs, as the holy month coincides with the winter season.

Despite colder temperatures limiting some outdoor activities, mosques and Islamic centers throughout the region have organized daily iftar meals, faith-based lectures, Qur’an recitations, and charitable initiatives. According to The Arab American News, Islamic centers in Dearborn and Dearborn Heights, along with neighboring communities, have expanded bilingual programming in Arabic and English to accommodate increased attendance during Ramadan. Many mosques have also prepared additional prayer spaces to manage large nightly congregations.

Local restaurants and banquet halls have resumed hosting communal iftars, while bakeries remain open into the early morning hours to provide suhoor meals, contributing to the seasonal nighttime economy in the area.

Charitable efforts are a central focus of the month. Volunteers are delivering meals to families in need and collecting surplus food from homes and restaurants for redistribution. The Islamic Institute of Knowledge has established a central collection point for excess meals after evening prayers to reduce food waste and support vulnerable residents.

Several religious centers are hosting large-scale charity programs, including one regional Islamic center projecting approximately $150,000 in Ramadan-related assistance, including daily iftars, weekly food baskets, and nightly suhoor meals during the final ten days of the month.
