The holy city of Qom on Tuesday witnessed the funeral procession of prominent Islamic scholar and researcher Sheikh Mohammad Reza Mamqani, in preparation for transferring his body to Najaf for burial near the Imam Ali Shrine.

The funeral cortege began at the Imam Hasan al-Askari Mosque and proceeded toward the shrine of Fatima Masumeh Shrine, amid a large turnout of senior clerics, seminary teachers, and students. The ceremony was marked by an atmosphere of mourning, reflecting the deceased scholar’s standing within Iran’s and Iraq’s religious seminaries.

According to seminary sources, Sheikh Mamqani’s remains are scheduled to be transferred to Najaf in the coming days, where he will be laid to rest in proximity to the Imam Ali Shrine, a burial traditionally reserved for leading Shiite scholars.

Sheikh Mamqani passed away on Monday at the age of 72 after decades of scholarly activity in jurisprudence, hadith studies, and ilm al-rijal (biographical evaluation of narrators). He was widely known for his teaching, research, and editorial work in advanced seminary circles.

The late scholar hailed from a renowned religious family. He was a descendant of Sheikh Mohammad Hasan Mamqani, author of the seminal biographical encyclopedia Tanqih al-Maqal fi Ilm al-Rijal, and traced his lineage to Sheikh Jaafar Kashif al-Ghita, one of the most influential figures in Imami jurisprudence.

Sheikh Mamqani authored and edited more than 80 scholarly works, including Mu‘jam al-Rumuz wa al-Isharat, a revised critical edition of Tanqih al-Maqal, a commentary on Miqbas al-Hidaya, and an edited version of Mathalib al-Nawasib. His contributions remain widely used by researchers and students.

Following his death, religious seminaries in Qom and Najaf issued condolence statements praising his scholarly legacy, while senior clerics highlighted his role in strengthening contemporary studies of hadith and biographical sciences.
