Grand Ayatollah Shirazi Says Unintentional Ingestion Does Not Invalidate Fasting
——————————–
Senior Shiite religious authority Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Hosseini al-Shirazi said that anything swallowed unintentionally or by mistake while fasting does not invalidate the fast.
The remarks were made during his daily scholarly session held on Sunday, the 4th of Ramadan 1447 AH, where he responded to questions from attendees on various jurisprudential matters, continuing a series of regular religious discussions.
Addressing a question on the ruling of eating or swallowing something during fasting due to forgetfulness, Grand Ayatollah Shirazi explained that any substance that enters the body unintentionally or as a result of oversight poses no problem and does not nullify the fast.
He clarified, however, that deliberate ingestion, even in a very small amount, invalidates the fast. The distinction, he noted, lies between actions committed unintentionally and those done knowingly and intentionally during the fasting period.
